The hardware requirements for load balancing vary considerably as you are able to use a small number of highly configured, high-powered servers or a larger number of lower spec servers (blades, for example).
Load balancing is a way of configuring and spreading incoming requests across as many as 32 servers. You can use load balancing to expand enterprise-wide services, such as Web servers, terminal services, and streaming-media servers. Load balancing offers two advantages:
| • | Redundancy - If one Web server fails, the other(s) assume the load. |
| • | Scalability and performance - You can add more Web servers as load increases. |
Network load balancing also ensures that your servers respond quickly, even under heavy loads. It does this by automatically detecting when a server stops working and then quickly reassigning client traffic among the remaining servers. This safeguard can help you provide uninterrupted service for your critical business programs.
You can follow the steps outlined in this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323437 to properly set up your Windows 2003 servers for a load balanced environment. This article will guide you through the steps required to set up your own load balanced cluster.
Once you have your server cluster set up, depending on your environment, you would install PerfectForms™ in either of the following ways:
| • | Single Shared SQL Server and Multiple IIS Servers Within Cluster - On your SQL server, when running the installer for PerfectForms™, choose the option to install the database only. Now on the remaining servers in the cluster which have IIS installed, when you run the PerfectForms™ installer, choose to install the application. |
Note: In this environment, the option to install completely is not used. |
| • | Single SQL/IIS Server Along with Multiple IIS Servers Within Cluster - In this environment, install PerfectForms™ choosing to install completely on the server which has both IIS and SQL installed. On the remaining servers in the cluster when running the PerfectForms™ installer, choose to only install the application. |
The PerfectForms™ application can run in a load balanced environment with multiple Web servers sharing the load. PerfectForms™ is designed to be completely stateless so any server can handle any individual request from any client.
