An instance will only recognize a user as occupying a role if the user accessed the instance via a link in a notification sent to that role, or if they occupy a role which was sent a link by the instance and they accessed the instance via the dashboard. Setting yourself up in a role does not good unless you send a notification to that role.

Another thing you could do is use a Simple Branch when the form opens. If the user name = your name use a Set State object to set the state of the object to Normal. If your workflow does not have specific rules from one stage to the next you may need to give yourself a special submit button that has a Set Next Stage behavior if you do not want to inadvertently change stages in the instance.
